The Senate is currently debating an energy bill (H.R. 6) -- a bill that still needs work in order to make any meaningful reduction in global warming pollutants.

One of the most obvious pieces missing from the bill is a requirement that a significant percentage of our nation's electricity comes from renewable energy. Renewable energies can help solve climate change AND save you money on your utility bills. Sen. Bingaman (D-NM) is offering an amendment to require utilities to produce at least 15% of our electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020. We support Sen. Bingaman's amendment and urge you to do the same.

The energy bill also takes it easy on the automakers, with a call for them to reach 35 mpg in fuel economy by 2018 -- which is less than the automakers could and should go with fuel economy. It gives automakers excuses not to reach the 35 mpg target, so that it's not even fully mandatory at all.

But right now, there are senators waiting in the wings to make the energy bill even weaker.

  • Sen. Domenici (R-NM) is going to offer an amendment that would count nuclear power and coal in the mix of a national energy standard. This makes absolutely no sense. The point of a standard is to promote renewable energies and to move our country towards clean and safe energy sources.

  • And Sen. Levin (D-MI) is going to offer an amendment that would allow the automakers not to meet fuel economy requirements if they just promise that in the future they will make vehicles with advanced technology. In other words, they could just promise their way out of the law.

Contact your Senators and tell them:

  • to vote YES for Sen. Bingaman's renewable energy standard amendment,
  • to vote NO on Sen. Domenici's amendment that includes nuclear and coal, and
  • to vote NO on Sen. Levin's amendment that would weaken fuel economy.
