House Passes Lobbying and Ethics Reform 411 to 8!

Tell the Senate to Follow

It’s finally here!

After months of building grassroots pressure, Congress is finally voting on a great lobbying and ethics reform bill that we can get behind ("Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007").

Getting legislation passed in Congress can be a long struggle, and lobbying & ethics reform has been a marathon.  Although the bill is not perfect, it has most of the provisions we demanded, including:

  • Bundling Disclosure – Now we will know which lobbyists are funneling cash to both members of Congress and to presidential candidates.
  • Revolving Door – Retired elected officials will have to cool their heels for a while before lobbying their former colleagues on the Hill.

These steps are a victory, and will be critical for ending the “culture of corruption” on Capitol Hill.

One senator tried to block passage; refusing to allow the bills to go to conference. But one senator could not stop real reform, and could not stop you. We need a clear vote for reform so that the bill can move quickly to the Senate!

Call or write your member of Congress now and tell them to vote “Yes” for reform now!  Call your senators (Senate directory; (202) 225-3121), and also send an e-mail below to ensure your voice is heard!

"Hello.  I am calling Senator ______________ to express my strong support for the lobbying and ethics bill entitled, "Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007."  The bill includes important reforms and is a step towards ending corruption in Congress.  I urge Senator _____________ to vote "Yes" for reform.  Thank you."
