JUST IN: Issue Defeated: Take Action to Know Where your Food Comes From!
10/27/5: 3:00 p.m. The Food Labeling Program was defeated -- see Public Citizen's statement.
Thank you for your interest and willingness to act on behalf of consumer justice. Stay tuned for information about how Public Citizen recommends activists redress this matter. What follows below is the original action requested. It is for informational purposes only.
Consumer groups and family farmers have been fighting for years to require mandatory country-of-origin-labeling (COOL) on meat, fruits, and vegetables in the United States. Mandatory COOL enables consumers to make informed decisions about the food they eat, and allows domestic farmers and ranchers to differentiate their product from imports. Many other countries have these rules, and the U.S. already requires seafood to be labeled. However, big industry wants to keep consumers in the dark, and continues to try to delay it or kill it!
Currently, the House plans to delay country-of-origin labeling (COOL) another year, until 2007, through the budget process and the Senate does not. Help make sure the final budget does not include a delay! Write to the Agricultural Appropriations Conference Committee asking them to enact mandatory COOL immediately. Consumers deserve to know what they are eating!
