Put Brakes on NAFTA Trucks Program Once and for All

Success!

Thanks to your significant show of strength pressuring Congress to do the right thing, Congress passed a final omnibus spending bill that keeps the provision killing funding for the NAFTA trucks pilot program.

Public Citizen will be keeping a close eye on the Bush administration in 2008, to make sure the White House actually follows the law.  You can help us make sure we have the resources we need to hit the ground running in January with a gift to Public Citizen. Click here to find out how.

Congress was very clear with the Bush administration: before allowing any Mexico-based trucking companies to cross into the U.S. beyond a limited border zone, it must guarantee the public's safety. But the administration has failed to meet even the most basic conditions.

Now, the Bush administration is barreling ahead with a so-called "pilot project" to allow 100 Mexico-based companies to send their trucks into the U.S. -- even though the congressional demands for safety guarantees have not been satisfied.

Thousands of us spoke out, and Congress listened.  Both the House and the Senate have passed versions of the spending bill for the Department of Transportation with amendments that would cut off the pilot program.  But the Bush administration has threatened to veto those bills.  As the House and Senate hammer out their differences on the bill, we have to make sure that they do not buckle under Bush's pressure.  Take action and stop the NAFTA trucks pilot program!
