The following is the take-action message that thousands of you responded to. Now that the vote is over, there is no need to take action at this time.

On Thursday morning, a Senate subcommittee will mark up climate change legislation that, in its current form, would give polluters hundreds of billions of dollars in free rights to pollute.  Take action ASAP to make sure the bill doesn't leave that committee until it's fixed to ensure that polluters pay.

Auctioning permits will encourage industry to make changes to improve efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and protect the climate sooner.  The bill as it is currently written would give polluters approximately $1.5 trillion worth of allocations for free over the life of the program, including $820 billion to the fossil fuel industry.

Tell your Senator on the subcommittee that the bill must distribute 100 percent of allocations by auction from the beginning of the program until the end.  No giveaway to greenhouse gas polluters!
