No NAFTA Trucks on our Highways!

The Bush administration pushed to expand the NAFTA trucking program -- the controversial "pilot program" giving Mexico-based trucking companies full access to U.S. roads, without adequate measures to ensure public safety.

Bush continued this program even though he signed a bill into law cutting off all funding for it.

Now, Obama's administration must put the public's safety first. Act now and tell Congress to follow up on their work and demand an end to this program!

2009 must bring a change in our approach to the NAFTA trucking program that blatantly disregards the law. The 2008 Appropriations Bill signed by George Bush prohibited using any funds to "establish" a pilot program. The dictionary's definition of "establish" includes "to introduce and cause to grow and multiply." However, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has told reporters that the law bars only the "establishment" of new pilot programs and that its current pilot program -- the exact same one that prompted Congress to cut off funding -- was "established" in September 2007. This dubious definition isn't just tortured logic -- it's a willful repudiation of the clear intent of Congress to end a flawed program it has repeatedly and overwhelmingly denounced as dangerous and unjustified. I demand you follow through on the 2008 Appropriations Bill's message and halt the NAFTA truck program immediately.
