Call Now to Stop the NAFTA Threat to Port Security!

Despite the waves of scandal and Iraq war disaster revelations, President Bush and the GOP congressional leaders are planning to sneak through Congress a critical trade vote with serious port security implications just after the November 7th elections – before the new Congress can take office.

What we’re talking about is a stealthy little provision we found slipped into an Annex of the proposed NAFTA expansion to Peru. It would subject the United States to a lawsuit before an international tribunal if Congress undermined the ability of any company in Peru to run U.S. ports. That’s just what Congress said the Dubai Ports World (DPW) company could not do earlier this year. Oops…and Peru’s ports were recently taken over by DPW.

Call the U.S. Capitol at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your representative
. Then call again for each of your Senators.

Don't know who your representative is?

When you reach your representative's office, ask to speak to the person who handles trade issues. Then:

1) Tell them you think the Peru-U.S. FTA is a bad idea

2) Ask them if they've seen the concerns about port security issues, and offer to send them a copy of the 1-pg fact sheet on it.
Ask them for the email address of the staffer in charge of trade, and then forward that person a copy of the fact sheet that you can download here:

3) Ask them for your representative's position on the deal.

4) Ask for a written statement of their position to be sent you by email or regular mail

5) Urge them to make a public statement about the Peru FTA before the November elections.

After you've called, tell us what they said!  Use the form below to let us know that you made a call about U.S.-Peru.  If you are told anything interesting, let us know.  This is critical to our ability to hold Congress accountable.

Please be sure to tell us the names of the Congressperson and the Senators whose offices you called.
