Demand Real Reform for the Texas Railroad Commission
Responsible Regulation of Oil and Gas Companies Needed to Protect Texans
The Energy Resources Committee of the Texas House of Representatives is poised to recommend a bill to reauthorize the Texas Railroad Commission without most of the needed reforms to the agency.
House Bill 1818 needs a lot of work, but the most important changes that the committee needs to include are:
- Proper bonding requirements to cover the cost of sealing wells if they are abandoned by the company
- Add a searchable database to the Railroad Commission website with information relating to spills, inspections, complaints, and enforcement actions, including fines and penalties
These basic reforms would be just the start to ensuring that oil and gas companies cover their own costs of doing business and that the public has fair access to information about which companies are repeatedly breaking the law.
