Ethics Reform Needed at the Texas Railroad Commission

Special interests are so entwined with the Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) that ordinary citizens are shut out of the process: more than 90 percent of campaign contributions come in checks greater than $1,000. The Texas Sunset Review board states the problem clearly: "The current structure … creates the appearance of favoritism because commissioners accept substantial campaign contributions from many of the industries they regulate."

House Bill 464 would address this problem by limiting when commissioners can accept campaign contributions. But the bill will die because of procedure deadlines if it isn’t set for a vote in the House right away.

Tell the Calendars Committee (which sets the calendar for bills going to the House floor) to schedule HB 464 for a vote right away.
