Support a 100% Carbon-Free Energy Plan for Austin Energy
The Austin City Council will receive recommendations on an update to the Austin Energy Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan (Austin’s long-range energy plan) on Monday. The recommendations — from a working group heavily influenced by the utility — fall well short of what is needed to lead on climate change. The recommendations call for slight increases in renewable energy and efficiency goals, but not the bold action that is needed.
Public Citizen and our partners are calling for a plan that sets a goal of 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2030 and an interim goal of 75 percent renewable energy by 2027. We’re also asking for bigger commitments to local solar, energy efficiency and energy storage.
These are the technologies of the 21st century. It’s time to phase out the utility’s fossil fuels and replace them with clean renewable energy.
