Protect your health and the health of a woman you care about, tell the Food & Drug Administration you support the ban on unsafe contraceptives.

Dear FDA Commissioner von Eschenbach,

Each year, millions of women fill prescriptions for birth control pills that are twice as likely as other oral contraceptives to cause life-threatening blood clots. These pills -- third generation oral contraceptives containing desogestrel-- have not been proven to be safer or more effective than birth control pills that do not contain desogestrel. On the contrary, study after study has shown these drugs to pose twice the risk of venous thrombosis. There are nine drugs that fall into this category: Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol, Desogestrel and Ethinyl, Desogen, Mircette, Velivet , Apri-28 , Kariva (Duramed/Barr), Ortho-Cept, Reclipsen, and Cyclessa. These drugs put women at an unacceptable increased risk of adverse events without providing a marked therapeutic advantage over other drugs approved for the same indication.

I support Public Citizen's petition to ban third generation oral contraceptives. As your are our defender of public health, Dr. von Eschenbach, I urge you to protect us and remove these drugs from the market.

Thank you.
