The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations are entitled to spend unlimited funds in our elections, rolling back a century of modest limits. The First Amendment was never intended to protect corporations.

This cannot stand. Join our campaign to protest this decision. Protect our democracy! Two things that can be done now:

1) Fair Elections Now Act: Give congressional candidates a public financing alternative to elections bankrolled by corporations. Also fix the presidential public financing system.
2) Shareholder Accountability: Give shareholders a say over corporate spending in elections.

But ultimately, we must pass a constitutional amendment to ensure corporate money does not overwhelm our democracy and clarify that the First Amendment is for people -- not corporations. Add your name to the petition to Congress today!

FREE SPEECH FOR PEOPLE AMENDMENT PETITION:

WHEREAS, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution was designed to protect the free speech rights of people, not corporations;

WHEREAS, for the past three decades, a divided United States Supreme Court has transformed the First Amendment into a powerful tool for corporations seeking to evade and invalidate democratically-enacted reforms;

WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC overturned longstanding precedent prohibiting corporations from spending their general treasury funds in our elections;

WHEREAS, this corporate takeover of the First Amendment has reached its extreme conclusion in the United States Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Citizens United v. FEC;

WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC will now unleash a torrent of corporate money in our political process unmatched by any campaign expenditure totals in United States history;

WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC presents a serious and direct threat to our democracy;

WHEREAS, the people of the United States have previously used the constitutional amendment process to correct those egregiously wrong decisions of the United States Supreme Court that go to the heart of our democracy and self-government;

Now hereby be it resolved that we the undersigned voters of the United States call upon the United States Congress to pass and send to the states for ratification a constitutional amendment to restore the First Amendment and fair elections to the people.

41689 March 10, 2010 Robert Bradley I agree that one vote per person should be the way, I also think we should do away with lobbiest who also give monies to candidates who do them favors, also stop tacking on legislation to bills which add to our deficit, make each bill a seperate issue to be voted on and illegal to add any bill on to or tacked on to a bill in any way or form unless it directly has to do with that bill. No more voting on stuff the legislation does not even know is in a bill. Lets also do away with bipartisenships, let each candidate stand for who they are not who their party is, we actually might get things done for the better of this country, also, stop the illegal imigration and the influx of imigrants we now have as I have just read we are becomming the minority and there are no jobs avaliable for those of us who are Citizens of the USA. Close the border and unless a person is bringing in a needed qualification to better this country, stop all imigration until we can get back on our feet. Bring back manufacturing to this country as the petroleum facilities are operating at half their production output due to no longer having a demand for the product they put out, which raises the cost to the consumer. Allow individuals to use resorces they live next to and develope them for power such as rivers so they can put in their own power generators this seems a green way to reduce the load off the power system. The way we regulate every thing now causes more problems than they fix, less government and more power to the people, that is what makes America great is allowing people to do things to benifit themselves and others not regulate them to death. My e-mail is blocked to all whom are not on my safe or contact list so I don't get all the junk. Also stop all the insurance companies from having power over the doctors who are treating and seeing you on a regular basis who know your condition and the insurance doctors who have only the interest of the bottom line for the insurance companies should be elliminated altogether, people with true disabilities are under constant stress and assult from the insurance companies even with documented proof of disabilities, the insurance companies hire doctors to disagree and cause the courts to be tied up with needless cases, as a people, we have to start caring about people as individuals and not as comodities, countries go to war and kill people over less than what disabled people are put through. I have phone conversations of corecion and how the insurance companies treat a person who ask questions, they find a way to make you pay for questions by not paying you on time or stopping payments only to restart them and back pay you which many disabled people feel like the insurance companies are the terrorist and allowed to get away with it. after 11 years od being fully disabled, they decide to stop paying me for the last three months with no income, can you live that long yet, the courts move slowly and even the IME doctors have not ruled about my disability, 11 herniated disk with full legnt annular tears in them, which leak fluid out, chronic pain 24/7, 120 mg morophine daily, heart flutters, tacycardia, reynard's syndrome, burning feet and heels, tension headaches due to muscle tension, nerve damage to both legs and arms, carpal tunnel syndrome, grinding and clinching teeth due to pain, broken teeth, ground thru gold crown and root canals in teeth with no problems all due to the chronic pain and other issues of depression and still assulted by the insurance companies, you have got to be kidding me who gave them this power? Lobbiest... Time to take back what is our right to control our government not the other way around, I ask for help and am ignored by all in power, those people WILL NOT get my vote come election time. I wrote Obama but have not heard back and I voted for him, I also voted for Bush twice before Obama, seems we need people who will stand up for the American People as they would for themselves not for a party line or for politics, time to get back to basics for the people, we can spend billions overseas yet ignore people who are in true need in this country, time to spend some of this money making life here easier, I find it hard to stomach people giving millions to governments who are corrupt and the money we give for the people of those countries see not benifit as it is coffered away into private accounts or distributed to corrupt individuals giving them more power as they have more money. If these countries are so needy, know where each dollar goes and it better go to making life for those people better period. We are now owned by a communist government all of our own doing, our debt to China is huge and if called in makes us bankrupt. Why because our industry went to them we are no longer the economic power we use to be why, we share too much of our technology, why because we are arrogant and look where we have ended up. Time for change big time.
