TRADE Act to be Introduced Any Day - Take Action Now!

Urge your representative to cosponsor the TRADE Act!

The TRADE Act - the remedy to NAFTA and WTO - will be reintroduced in the next few days. Having as many members of Congress sign on as cosponsors now is critical to demonstrate the broad demand for trade reform. Contact your member today!

Dear Fair Trade Supporter,

We expect landmark legislation that lays out the specifics for replacing our failed NAFTA-WTO trade policy to be reintroduced any day now. With your help locking down the final cosponsors on the Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act, our champion Rep. Mike Michaud might be able to introduce it next week!

Please email your member of Congress today and urge him or her to sign on to the TRADE Act as an original cosponsor!

The momentum for progressive trade reform has shifted our way in recent weeks. Because of you, we've successfully stopped the sneaky push to shove Bush's Panama NAFTA expansion through Congress for now! Thanks to your effort, the White House recognized the political peril of their Trade Representative trying to bring up Bush's leftover NAFTA expansion instead of focusing on important progressive priorities like health care and energy.[1]

That was an important political win. Now we must win on the policy front. President Obama has promised a major trade reform speech this summer. Now we must demonstrate that the political momentum for trade reform has reached a fever pitch.

If you get your House member signed onto the TRADE Act this week, you will send a signal to the administration that only the strong, specific trade reform agenda of the TRADE Act will gain support in Congress. And we can ensure Obama's speech sounds like the ones he gave on the campaign trail, rather than the recent big business lovefests from his U.S. Trade Representative.

Urge your member of Congress to become an original TRADE Act cosponsor today.

The TRADE Act lays out in detail what provisions must and must not be in U.S. trade pacts so they can deliver on societal goals such as good jobs, safe food and promotion of basic human rights, healthy communities and environmental protection. The bill also lays out a concrete path for achieving those goals with respect to renegotiating old pacts like NAFTA and WTO and negotiating new ones.

Last year, 74 House members and six Senators cosponsored this important legislation. We're expecting even broader support in 2009 – and we need it to make sure trade reform becomes a reality.

Please take action today and ask your representative to sign on to this year's TRADE Act and replace the NAFTA/WTO model once and for all.
