Tell the EPA: No Ethanol Increase Ethanol is harmful to your health, your vehicle and the environment. Speak out against more ethanol in gasoline today! An ethanol trade association recently petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to raise the allowable ethanol content of gasoline from 10 percent to 15 percent. When ethanol is burned, it generates ozone, a corrosive and toxic gas that damages lung tissue and can trigger or worsen asthma and other respiratory problems. In addition, most vehicle warranty agreements instruct owners not to fuel their vehicles with gas that contains more than 10 percent ethanol. Adding more ethanol to gas could cause damage vehicle components and emissions control systems. If you own a vehicle damaged because of this, you won’t be eligible for warranty claims. Fortunately, you have the chance to speak out against this concerning development. The EPA has asked for public comments on the ethanol industry’s petition. February 09, 2010 Subject: Dear Administrator Jackson: I urge you to deny the petition to raise the allowable ethanol content of gasoline to 15 percent. The existing research on impacts for “legacy” fleets, that is cars that are now on the road, have not been studied for a broad enough range of vehicles, and the available studies show that there are negative consequences to using E15 in vehicles on the road including: • Damage to materials used as engine components, potentially resulting in reduction of component life or failure • Damage to emissions control systems, resulting in decreased air quality performance • Problems in resetting air/fuel ratios, resulting in increased combustion temperatures Most manufacturers warranty agreements specifically instruct consumers not to fuel their vehicles with ethanol blends greater than 10 percent ethanol. There is potential that damage to vehicle components and emissions control systems would not be eligible for warranty claims. Ethanol is related to increased ground level ozone, which is related to asthma and other respiratory problems. The EPA must take into account the air quality and public health impacts of increasing the amount of ethanol that is blended into gasoline. The environmental benefits of ethanol are unclear. EPA is currently assessing the lifecycle greenhouse gas impacts of ethanol and other biofuels. It would be premature for EPA to permit increased ethanol blending before it has publicly released the results of this assessment. I urge that further consideration of increasing the allowable ethanol content be delayed until ongoing research has been completed and a full, science-based assessment of the potential consequences of increasing the ethanol content in gasoline.
