Call on Senate to Stand Up to Polluters Last week, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) voted in favor of the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act.  The draft bill still contains compromises, flaws, loopholes and giveaways that undermines a meaningful clean energy and climate bill.  Call on your Senator to stand up to special interest and send a  clear signal to world leaders that the U.S. is a leader in fighting climate change and investing in clean energy. July 31, 2010 Subject: Dear Senator, As your constituent, I thank you for taking up the work of climate change Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions is not only a necessity but will also spur a new economic revolution and create millions of good, green jobs. I would like to further thank you for supporting two consumer protection provision that were included in the draft bill that passed the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee last week; the establishment of an Office for Consumer Advocacy and improved guarantees that households will actually receive rate protections from utilities. While these provisions are important and reflect your understanding that protections for households and families must be included in a meaningful climate bill, the bill as a whole is still woefully inadequate. As your constituent I call on you to stand up to the $100 million lobbying campaign by utilities and support transformative climate legislation that: 1) Achieves carbon emission reductions in line with what science says is imperative (25-40 percent reduction from 1990 levels by 2020); 2) Establishes incentives to promote rooftop solar and wind power instead of new nuclear power and coal plants; 3) If it is going to rely on a cap-and-trade scheme, at least embraces President Barack Obama's call - as repeated in his August revised budget submitted to Congress - for a 100 percent auction that holds polluters accountable and delivers rebates and energy efficiency investments directly to the American people rather than through utilities; 4) Limits the use of offsets so our policies promote real emissions reductions, not theoretical ones; 5) Prohibits Wall Street from investing in a cap-and-trade speculation frenzy; and 6) Mandates strong efficiency standards for buildings, appliances and transportation. The world is looking to the U.S. to be a strong leader in the fight to mitigate climate change. Now is the time to cast aside special interest and pass robust legislation to usher in a new era of clean, safe and affordable energy.
